I had double eyelid surgery and my eyelids are too big. What should I do?

Currently, double eyelid surgery is very popular. Naturally, problems arising from this surgery are becoming more common. From the experience of doctors working in this field, the most frequent problem is dissatisfaction with the eyelid crease, whether it's uneven eyelids, eyelids that are too small, or eyelids that are too thick or large.

In this article, I will provide information about the consequences of double eyelid surgery that can result in excessively large eyelids. Causes of excessively large eyelids include: 1. The patient's desire for high, thick, and large eyelids without understanding the structure of their own eye muscles and orbital bone. 2. The suture line that anchors the eyelid crease is too high, making the eyelid appear thick and large. 3. The incision line during double eyelid surgery is too high. 4. Underlying eyelid muscle weakness, resulting in inability to fully open the eyes, causing drooping or sagging. This makes the eyelid appear thick and large. Conversely, eyelid muscle problems can also arise from the high anchoring of the eyelid crease, leading to muscle weakness and reduced eyelid function. 5. Deep-set eyes. People with naturally deep-set eyes, or those who have had previous surgery, may have thicker-looking eyelids. Typically, when patients consult me about wanting thicker and larger eyelids, I always advise them that when they see other people's eyes and want that look, it's necessary to consider their own eye anatomy and structure to determine if it's feasible. Most importantly, I will design a procedure to assess their needs. Which type of eyelid is best for me?

How to solve the problem of large eyelids.

1. If the eyelid crease attachment point is too high, lowering the attachment point may be considered. 2. If the incision is deep and high, scar removal may be necessary to prevent reattachment of the original eyelid crease. 3. Correction of ptosis (weak eyelid muscles): If the patient has drooping eyelids and cannot fully open their eyes, eyelid muscle surgery can improve eye opening and create a brighter appearance. 4. Correction of sunken eye sockets: This can be done through fat transposition, fat grafting, or filler injection.

In summary, based on my experience, correcting thick or large eyelids is not an easy treatment, but it is treatable. However, the treatment can be complex in some cases. It's best to consult with a surgeon to discuss and plan the treatment thoroughly.
